Bob’s Red Mill Old Country Style Muesli
Good Food is the Best Medicine
Muesli was invented over a century ago by Swiss doctor Maximilian Bircher-Benner, a man who was way ahead of his time when it came to understanding the health benefits of whole grains. He knew that good food is the best medicine, so he created a blend of hearty whole grains, fruit and nuts to nourish his patients. Inspired by Dr. Bircher-Benner’s creation, Bob’s Red Mill Old County Style Muesli is made with a combination of five flavorful rolled whole grains—oats, wheat, barley, rye and triticale. Dates and raisins add sweetness; sunflower seeds, almond slices and walnut pieces add crunch; and flaxseed meal gives an extra nutritional boost. For a wholesome breakfast, eat muesli as a cold cereal with milk or yogurt. For a hearty hot meal, cook muesli on the stovetop like oatmeal.

PROS a quality product with lots of the "good stuff" with generous sunflower seeds and soft, easy to chew raisins. Just the right amount of salt and LOW sugar which is SOOO much healthier, thank you!
CONS I couldn't detect any walnuts within as suggested on the label
The overall flavor is a bit bland but definitely quality ingredient choices making this purchase more than worthwhile. Here's a couple ideas to jazz it up a little: sprinkle powdered cinnamon...and/or the modern Europeans way: toast the cereal in the PREHEATED oven (425 degrees) spreading evenly over a large cookie sheet 5 minutes at first then stir and bake 3 or 4 minutes (to toast the grains on the bottom too). Watch brownness and smoke coming off which means your cookie sheet is too close to the oven element. Convection oven (air-circulating) works best.
Toasting really brings out the flavor and adds crunch! (Bob's Red Mill please note)
I have just ordered my second 4 x 40 oz box in less than a month. Everybody has their own concoction, but my preferred way is to chop up a banana, a bit of honey, some baker's dark chocolate (no sugar), a couple of strawberries or blue berries, top it off with milk and about 2 tablespoons or more of yoghurt. This is my post run meal. Pre-run, I prefer to add hot milk with just the Muesli for a quick snack. If I eat something else for breakfast, then I carry this mix for lunch. By the time lunch rolls around, the Muesli softens nicely. It is not a soggy mess, but is just soft enough to go down smoothly. Experiment with soaking it for longer periods to suite your taste.
Not too long ago, I was diagnosed with extremely low blood sugar and used to wake up light headed (I am NOT a diabetic). Eating Muesli for dinner has really brought this under control. Now, most of my runs are in the morning. Of course, I am not for one second suggesting that this is a miracle drug, but my point is to emphasize the benefits of slow-release carbohydrates. I love the mix of nuts, almonds, raisins and dates that come mixed with the Muesli. Some people have complained about it sitting heavy in your stomach, which is true to some extent, but after a week of regular consumption, this feeling completely disappeared for me. Compared to Adli's Musli (if they ever have them in stock), this is a much better deal and has more good stuff in it!
Overall, let me just say that I am not going to be buying anything else for a long time. Fantastic product that deserves 5 stars.
3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup quick oats or 3/4 cup old fashioned oats...use Red Mill Muesli
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice (I usually use more)
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 eggs
1 (15 ounce) can solid pack pumpkin
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar
1 cup milk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup chopped walnuts or 1 cup pecans...did not incorporate since many seeds and nuts in muesli already...just added bit more muesli.
Directions:
1Combine flour, oats, baking soda, pumpkin pie spice, baking powder and salt in large bowl.
2Beat eggs, pumpkin, sugars, milk, and oil in large mixer bowl on medium speed until combined.
3Beat flour mixture into pumpkin mixture on low speed just until blended; stir in nuts.
4Spoon into 2 greased 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pans.
5Bake in preheated 350F oven for 65 to 70 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.
6Cool in pans for 10 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.
7NOTE: For mini loaves, prepare as directed and pour batter into 6 greased 5 5/8 x 3 1/4 mini loaf pans.
8Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.
Forget the unsweetened claims, there's plenty of dried fruit. But otherwise, as a low-fat, high fiber, burn-some-calories-chewing food, it does good. I don't soak it long enough, so it is gnarly to chew up, especially when I need to eat fast to catch the bus - an adventure in the morning!
Why does the label claim servings are an ounce? That would make these 10 lbs last 160 breakfasts, I'm sure my serving is 4X bigger.
If I want something tastier, however, I recommend the granola from Oat Cuisine of Alameda, CA - nicely brown, crunchy, and not too sweet, which can be ordered from their web page.
