Care Tips for Swiss Army Knives
The various tools of a swiss army knife are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion. With it's unique build Swiss Army Knives require easy but particular care. Use the recommendations below to keep your knife at it's peak functionality.
- SHARPENING: Use a whetstone at an angle of 15°– 20°. This will result in a cutting angle of 30°– 40°. If sharpening on a grinding wheel, cool with plenty of water to avoid excessive temperatures.
- CLEANING: Open and close the blades in warm water several times. When they have dried it is recommended to apply a small drop of oil between the blade, tool shank and the spring or locking mechanism.
- WARNING: Never put Swiss Army Knives in the dishwasher.
- RECOMMENDATION: Swiss Army Knife Oil (Item No.4.3301). FEATURES: (1) neutral odor and taste, (2) highly resistant to aging, (3) good wear and corrosion protection qualities, and (4) Food safe

The Four Cornerstones of Victorinox
The various tools of a Swiss Army Knife are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion. Every knife embodies our four cornerstones: quality, functionality, innovation and iconic design.
Functionality
The Swiss Army Knife is the ultimate multi-tool. Whether you need a magnifying glass to read fine print or a metal saw to cut through iron, the Swiss Army knife has your back. In addition to a blade, these gadgets include various implements such as screwdrivers, bottle openers, and scissors.
Innovation is our Tradition
Innovation is our tradition and has been ever since we patented the first Swiss Army Knife in 1897. Here in the Swiss Knife Valley, we take lumps of molten steel and blend with generations of experience to forge knives which are loved all over the world. As we continue to find new ways to improve our knives we also strive to apply better solutions that meet new requirements and our customers unarticulated needs.
Iconic Design
In 1891 Karl Elsener, the owner of Victorinox, was under contract by the Swiss Army to produce a folding pocket knife to be suitable for use by soldiers for opening canned food and disassembling the Swiss service rifle. Elsener invented a special spring mechanism allowing him to attach the tools on both sides of the handle, using the same spring to hold the tools in place. This innovative design meant Elsener could put twice as many features on the knife, which included a blade, a second smaller cutting blade, reamer, can-opener, screwdriver, corkscrew, and wood fiber grips. The Swiss Army Knife is the most recognizable icon of utility and smart design, and the knives are still made exclusively in only two factories in Switzerland.

About Swiss Army Knives
In 1884, Swiss cutler Karl Elsener set up shop in Ibach-Schwyz, installing a waterwheel in Tobelbach Brook to run his grinding and polishing machines. Thus began what would become the international brand name Victorinox, a combination of Victoria, for Elsener's mother, and "inox," or stainless steel. Today, Victorinox produces watches, luggage, clothing, and, famously, Swiss Army Knives. The forerunner of that name dates to 1897, when Elsener patented the Swiss Officer's and Sports Knife he supplied to the Swiss Army. Following World War II, American servicemen and women shopping in PX stores shortened the name to Swiss Army Knife, which lives on in English-speaking countries around the world and has become a metaphor or versatility.

Now for the value, I paid $25 for this set. That's a steal for the Tinker alone, but this comes with a Classic SD as well! I always thought the Classic SD, while great, was a little overpriced at $15-20 on average. It's a tiny blade with just scissors and a nail file accompanying. Very useful and great on keys (and I'm a guy who HATES bulky key fobs), but not worth the price stated. This whole set was $25, a great way to get the Classic SD without overpaying, and to get the most useful medium/small EDC SAK out there.
Further, Victorinox quality is superb. Comparing it to my Wenger, it is definitely better (Victorinox bought Wenger, so the question is somewhat moot, but still worth comparison), with Wenger still being great quality. Amazing that a brand with such heritage and high standing, in a market with not a lot of competitors, could be so affordable (look at Buck or Kabar for comparison in regular knives - both storied and quality in a field with a lot of competitors, but both somewhat expensive).
Finally, at first I was torn between the Tinker and Alox Cadet. The Cadet was thinner, and the Alox scales would age better than the classic plastic handles. However, the Cadet is missing the back two tools of the Tinker (philips driver and awl/sewer), and it was more expensive than the Tinker. Once I came across the Tinker+SD bundle, my decision was made, too god to pass up. So happy with this purchase.
The knives are as good quality as any other Victorinox knives I've had go. This is a great way to have the essentials at a low price. The build quality is great, but I did find that there was an excess of oil on the blades when opening the knife for the first time. Be sure to have a tissue handy.
The knives
-The Tinker - probably the most commonly used SAK in the world. This is just like the original Spartan, but has a Philips screwdriver instead of the corkscrew. It comes with the essentials - blade, smaller blade, bottle opener/wire stripper/flathead, reamer, screwdriver, and bottle opener. The reamer itsself has a farely sharp blade on it, and so does the can opener. To many, this knife will have all they need and then some on a package that is farely thin and light. I find that SAK's that are thicker than this (2 slots) can be unwieldy and heavy to carry around in the pocket from day to day.
-The Classic - Great little knife to keep in the bag, in the desk, by the couch, or just about anywhere. It is tiny, and has a good blade, a nail file with a small flathead end, and a pair of scissors. I've used these scissors just about my whole life to cut my nails, and they work fantastic.
These two knives make a great pair, and could be a good gift that will be treasured by the recipient for a long time to come. Not only will they last through many years of good use, but Victorinox backs them up with an awesome lifetime warranty. It is also a timeless classic, and who doesn't appreciate that?
