StudScanUse this mode to find the edges of wood or metal studs up to 3/4 inches (19 millimeters) deep. For best results, always start in this mode when looking for studs. Note: WireWarning detection works in both StudScan and DeepScan modes. The indicator flashes on the screen when detecting a live, unshielded wire. |
DeepScanIf StudScan mode provides irregular readings or the Signal Strength indicator is weak, the studs might be behind more than ¾ inches (19 millimeters) of drywall. Slide the mode selector over one notch to switch to DeepScan mode. This doubles the scanning depth to 1½ inches (38 millimeters) deep and allows for increased accuracy on deeper targets. Note: WireWarning detection works in both StudScan and DeepScan modes. The indicator flashes on the screen when detecting a live, unshielded wire. |

The Key to Success is in the BatteryA new, fully charged 9V battery is required to steadily power the integrated LCD screen in Zircon tools. Please note that, like a cell phone or any personal electronic device, the 9V batteries needed to power Zircon tools can lose power even when sitting idle. The installation of a fresh battery, with an extended expiration date, typically resolves 99% of problems seen by Zircon Customer Support. |

Product Description
The Zircon StudSensor e50 is an electronic edge finding stud finder. The e50's body design reduces normal scanning errors and can be comfortably held in either hand at any angle while the rubber over molded grip also provides a secure hold. The SS e50 easily locates the edges of wood and metal studs and joists behind walls, floors, and in ceilings with just one pass. In StudScan mode, the SSe50 locates the edges of shallower wood or metal studs up to 3/4 of an inch (19 mm) deep. Switch over to DeepScan mode to double the scanning depth to 1.5 inches (38 mm). This stud sensor is programmed with a WireWarning Detection feature that indicates the presence of live unshielded electrical wires up to 2 inches (50 mm) deep when using both stud scan modes. Finding studs using this edge finding tool is simple. To get started, install one brand new 9V alkaline battery (not included). Place the unit flat against the wall and press the Power Button to calibrate the sensor. Once you hear a beep indicating calibration is complete, continue to hold the Power Button and slowly slide the tool across the surface. The easy-to-read LCD will alert you as the stud detector approaches the edge of the stud in both scanning modes. Once the edge is detected, an arrow-shaped SpotLite Pointer will illuminate and an audio tone will sound. DO NOT DRILL HERE! Instead, mark the spot and continue past the stud. Repeat the process in the opposite direction and mark the opposite edge of the stud. The center of the stud is midway between the two marks. Make sure to note whether the WireWarning Detection is alerting to live, unshielded AC wiring before drilling between the two marks into the center of the stud. With the Zircon StudSensor e50, you can safely maneuver through the most complicated of projects with the professional confidence that comes from owning a Zircon.

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

Customers are mixed about the accuracy of the tool. Some mention that it was very easy to use, and accurately detected the edges of the studs; while others say that the edge detection is not very accurate, and the indications are inconsistent. This worked very well. I purchased after my cheap black and decker stud finder died, so after reading some reviews I decided on this guy. It's pretty nice and very easy to use, though I don't quite get the DeepScan switch. It like all stud finders, it will throw you off if you turn it on while you are on a stud. Ensure you are on an open space of the wall then turn it on, now as you slide it across the wall, it will give you a good leading and trailing edge of a stude. I just hung a TV and was able to locate 2 studs perfectly so a large 6mm lag bolt hit center.
The sensor itself works pretty well; I have some open back walls in the basement which allow me to try the sensor on the wallboard side and check the accuracy on the open 2x4 side. No issues. I would NOT recommend that anyone trust their life to this gadget for pointing out electrical wires or plumbing pipes. For the price, for the typical DIY homeowner, I think the Zircon e50 is adequate if used judiciously. I like it better than the earth magnet types - it seems to do a good job of finding the studs even when there are no nails to be found. I've an older Zircon (a couple of decades or better) and this new one works much better.
Make sure you have a 9-volt battery handy - mine didn't come with one. The e50 is at the low end of the Zircon models; at the market price you really can't expect to get batteries, too.
If you need a sensor that can point to the center of the stud, rather than the edges, there's an upgraded Zircon model that reportedly do that. For my DIY uses, the e50 should be close enough.

Yes, I pointed it at myself, made it beep and claimed to my wife that it had indeed found a stud.
These have limitations. It senses a change in dielectric strength, so they can get confused by walls of varying thickness, or areas of roughness.
If that is not what you want to deal with, there are more expensive options that use a plate with multiple sensors.
